Listen guys, I like moon bases as much as the next guy, but it is a really, really, really stupid idea (at this point in time) and it isn’t where NASA’s money should be going.
There is a nice article on CNN about just that. Here is a great quote that reflects my aversion towards unnecessary manned space flight:

Human space flight originated as a symbolic competition during the Cold War era. The development of nuclear weapons deterred the U.S. and the Soviet Union from the hot war they might otherwise have fought. Instead, the two sides sought other ways to demonstrate their power, culminating in the race to the moon.

Gingrich’s empty promise does not support genuine scientific exploration… it supports returning to an era of delusional pissing contests between nations. Unlike most religions, science is on its way towards becoming a vessel for peace and understanding, and in the hands of the wrong people (greed and money-fueled politicians), it will be completely ruined. We have already seen science become mutated into something evil among the food and pharmaceutical industries… we must not let the cosmos submit to a similar fate.
Personally, I would like to see more unmanned projects exploring the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. They are remarkable… especially Europa.
